South Korea Martial Law Row: President lifts martial law after massive public outrage

Just hours after declaring martial law, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has declared that martial law will be lifted. Members of South Korea's national assembly unanimously opposed him, forcing him to concede. The nation's democracy is facing its biggest threat since the 1980s: the political crisis.

After accusing his political rivals of being "communists" with "pro-North Korean sympathies" and participating in "anti-state activities," the president, who was dealing with a political crisis and little public support, attempted in what seemed to be a desperate gamble to impose military rule.

However, the national assembly rejected the announcement after it sparked widespread protests outside parliament. Yoon stated that troops would return to their barracks and the order would be lifted following some of the most tense hours in the nation's recent history.

As a result of his attacks on South Korea's democracy and constitution, political opponents are now calling for the President to resign immediately and some are even calling for him to face treason charges.
